I have always owned and used the Brother knitting machines. I had 3 or 4 machines at all times. But Brother quit making them so now you can only buy used ones. A used machine is not a bad choice though. I have bought two used machines online and have had no trouble with either one them.

But the machines I used were not computerized or electrical either. All the machines I owned and used for my business were punchard bulky or standard machines. The punchards were 24 stitches repeat and provided plenty of choices for designs.

The also had many choices of stitches yo use. There was the lace stitch, weave, and fairisle just to mention a few. I could do intarsia, multiple patterns or even isolate one if I wanted. I had so many choices I never saw a need to get the biggest, fanciest machine available on the market. All I needed was a bulky or standard and a punchard and I had all the business I could manage.

If you know your machine you can covert just about any other machines pattern to work on whatever machine you own. I do not know a lot about the Bond knitting machine but I do not believe it would hold up to the constant production a business would entail.

I think the Ultimate Sweater machine is fine for the home knitter or for teaching the kids how to knit. But the production of knitting constantly needs a pretty sturdy machine.

If you do decide to buy a used machine, make sure it is clean with no oil build up or rust. If well maintained there is no reason for these machines not to last for many many years. There are not that many parts to break or cause problems, with the machines I use. You can still get needles and parts for the Brother machines. You will often see them sold under the Brother name or the Knit King Knitting machines, which are the same.

Maintenance is the keyword here. The fancier the machine, the more bells and whistles they have the more that can go wrong. Your machine choice will depend on what you plan to do. Are you going to be a designer? If you plan on creating one of kind items, than you may want all that the machines have to offer.

I needed a workhorse. Yes I designed but I designed for production of multiple items.. I never created the intricate, detailed items that take weeks to produce. Mine were fast and functional.

I could whip out a ski cap with a thick ribbed edging, a complete pattern that ran all around the entire hat and have it personalized with the requested name in three different colors in 15 minutes. I could knit about 30 hats a day, sold them for between $8.00 and $30.00 per hat. Not too bad for working at home and being available for my family.

I loved my work and always found it very fulfilling. You need to do your homework and decide what type of knitting business you want and buy your machine accordingly.

However, larger volume users may want to consider an electric machine to help improve productivity and reduce the risks for repetitive motion injuries.

• One major oversight by DFG when they designed the Titan-Wire is that they neglected to include a wire holder or wire hanger on the machine. This feature is used to hold the wire spines in place while you hang your pages onto the loops of the wire spine. Unfortunately, without a wire hanger you have to hold the spine in one hand and the wire in another. That is difficult for almost any user and it greatly cuts into the productivity of this unit.

• The placement of the wire closer on this unit is also less than ideal. Having the wire closer on the top of the machine means that you have to lift the document and the wire up to the closer without the spine falling off. This can be pretty tricky, even for experienced users. Other machines that have the wire closer located at the front of the machine tend to be much easier to use.

• The other issue with this machine is that it only has an eleven inch punching throat and wire closer. Many other comparable machines on the market have a fourteen inch punching throat. For organizations that never need to bind documents over 11" this isn't a problem. However, if your company will ever need to bind documents that are legal sized or A4 size this machine will be a lot more difficult to use. This is definitely something to keep in mind when comparing this machine to other similar pieces of equipment on the market.

Recommendation:

• The Titan Wire 3:1 pitch binding machine is one of the strongest and most durable binding machines that is available on the market today.

• In many areas its construction and features are exceptional and allow it to stand apart from its competition.

However, the body and case of this machine are actually made of heavy die cast metal components. The EC-2000 uses the same heavy duty case and design as the more expensive E-Titan Coil, it just doesn't have disengageable dies.

• In testing the punch on this machine I was able to punch up to twenty five sheets of 20lb paper. However, this was a fairly tight fit. I would probably recommend punching between twenty and twenty-two sheets of paper at a time. This is actually a very good punching capacity for a machine of this type and should offer excellent productivity for most medium and large sized organizations.

• The EC-2000 includes a pair of spiral coil crimping pliers in the box with the machine. These pliers are designed to cut and crimp the ends of your coil so that the spirals do not spin back off of your bound documents. It is great that this machine includes a pair since they cost about $30 if you have to buy them separately.

• In addition to the heavy duty electric punch, the EC2000 also includes a number of other great features. It has a document measuring device built into the right side of the machine and a depth of punch margin control on the left side of the machine. It also has a spiral coil inserter on the top of the machine and a foot pedal switch to activate either the punch or inserter.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

• The major limitation of the EC2000 and the reason why it costs considerably less than some other electric coil binding machines is the fact that it has no disengageable dies. This simply means that it is not possible to stop any of the individual pins from punching. This may not seem like it is a big deal. However, this fact makes it almost impossible to punch any size of document other than eleven inches using the binding machine. Truthfully, the machine can punch almost any length of document. However, without disengageable dies, your pages will end up with a half hole on the edge of your documents. The inserter still works fine, it is just more difficult to use than other coil inserters that I have evaluated.

• This machine uses a foot pedal to activate the punch and the coil inserter. However, the foot pedal is not nearly as heavy duty as the other components used on this machine. The foot pedal is the weakest link in this machine and considering that it will need to be stepped on hundreds and thousands of times this is somewhat concerning. This means that it may need to eventually be replaced.

Recommendation:

• For organizations that only need to bind letter sized documents, the EC-2000 is an excellent choice. Although it cannot handle legal size, A4 or half letter sized sheets, this machine has all of the other features included in far more expensive binding machines.

• It has a heavy duty electric punch, a built in coil inserter, a depth of punch margin control and even comes with a pair of coil crimpers.

• All of these things make the EC2000 an excellent choice for medium and large sized organizations.

Many small offices and home offices are looking for a way to bind their documents, reports and presentations but don't have the budget to spend hundreds of dollars on a binding system. That is where the GBC CombBind C50 plastic comb binding machine comes in.

With a price tag of less than $70 this machine is designed for the small office that occasionally need to bind a document or presentation. Recognizing that this machine is not designed to compete with larger solutions that cost three for four times as much, this review will take a look at the features, limitations and construction of the GBC C50 binding machine.

Features:

The C50 includes everything that you need to bind a document with plastic combs or Zipbind. It has a light duty punch that is capable of punching up to 5-6 sheets of 20lb paper at a time. This punch operates just like a large desktop 3-hole punch. You simply have to push the front of the machine down to activate the punching mechanism.

Realistically, you will end up punching about 4 sheets of paper at a time in order to use the machine comfortably. Clear covers should be punched one at a time on this machine and poly binding covers should most likely be purchased pre-punched.

This machine also includes an integrated plastic comb opener that is designed to open plastic combs up to ½" in diameter. The comb opener on this machine will not open wide enough to open larger sized combs. This means that the C50 is limited to thinner books and documents. The comb opener is operated by two handles (one on each side of the machine).

You simply push the handle away from you to open the plastic comb. The fact that there are two handles makes the machine user friendly for both left handed people and right handed people.

The Combind C50 also includes a paper edge guide that is adjustable for letter sized paper, oversized covers and A4 sized paper. The edge guide is simple to operate. All you need to do is turn a small wheel with your finger and the edge will be set for the correct size of paper. In fact, the edge guide is one of the easiest to use of any of the comb binding machines that I have seen. It is a definitely bonus on a machine at this price tag.

Limitations:

Like most smaller binding machines the CombBind C50 aslo has some limitations that should be noted. As a low priced machine it is not designed for high volume users and can't handle certain applications.

This machine is designed to punch three lengths of paper (letter size, A4 size and oversize cover). If you are going to need to punch or bind other sizes including landscape documents or half letter (8.5" x 5.5") books you will need a machine with disengageable punching pins. This machine does not include this feature.

As was noted above, the C50 is not capable of opening larger sized plastic comb binding spines. The fingers for the opener on this machine is made of plastic and attempting to use it with larger combs could result in one of the teeth breaking off.

This means that you will be limited to documents that contain less than 90 sheets of 20lb bond paper. This machine should also not be used with 3/16" diameter combs since the distance of the holes to the edge of the paper will make documents difficult to use with such small comb binding spines.

Construction:

As might be expected of a machine in this price range, the C50 is composed mostly of plastic. For the most part this should not be a problem since this machine is built for light volume applications. My only concern would be the teeth for the comb opener (the parts that stick up). These teeth seem a little bit flimsy and could potentially break off if you are not careful. With this in mind, I would estimate that the GBC C50 has a useful life of approximately two years under normal circumstances.

Recommendation:

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the GBC C50 binding machine to a small office or home office that needs to put a few documents together. It is also an ideal solution for mobile solutions where a binding machine is needed in your card or mobile office.

In fact, it is a popular choice of appraisers and home inspectors who bind reports on site. However, if you bind more than a few documents per week I would suggest buying a larger machine.
